SEREMBAN: Up to 500 people drown nationwide every year, Fire and Rescue Department director-general Mohammad Hamdan Wahid said yesterday.
The number is three times higher than fire-related deaths recorded by the department.
“It is an alarming number and as such, preventive measures as well as public awareness (on water safety) must be given strong emphasis,” he said.
He added that most drownings occur at recreational spots such as beaches, rivers and swimming pools during festive seasons and school holidays.
As part of drowning prevention measures, Mohamad Hamdan suggested that a law related to water activities be formulated. - BERNAMA
