SEPANG: The Express Rail Link (ERL) Sdn Bhd is expecting a 5% increase in passengers with the launch of three new trains at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Tuesday (March 13).
ERL chief executive officer Noormah Mohd Noor explained that the fare hike in 2016 from RM35 to RM55 for a
one-way trip from KL Sentral to KLIA had caused ridership to suffer a drop of over 15%.
Noormah, however, added that the ERL is expecting nine million passengers this year, compared with 8.5 million in 2017, with the introduction of the three trains and a new collaboration with ride-hailing service Grab and Uber.
“We are slowly getting back our passenger figures and we should be able to come back to the previous figure.
"We are also looking to work with airlines to make these trains an option for travellers when they are booking their tickets online,” she said during a press conference.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai was present during the event, which saw the launch of a 192-seater KLIA Ekspres train and two other KLIA Transit trains.
There are now nine KLIA Ekspres trains and six KLIA Transit trains.
Liow congratulated ERL for collaborating with ride-hailing services, as it would encourage more passengers to use public transport.
“Instead of competing with e-hailing services, they are working with them. I think this is a good effort by the ERL. We should all work together so we can provide connectivity,” said Liow.
He added that the new trains offer better value, saying that this is important in attracting more people to use public transport.
“It also complements the Government’s commitment to improving land public transport infrastructure, quality of service, and first-and-last mile connectivity,” Liow said.
Liow also announced a special free ride for families with children aged 12 and below on both ERL services to and from all stations on March 17 and 18, in conjunction with the unveiling of the new trains and school holidays.
“These tickets can be collected from 9am to 5pm at all ERL stations and it must be used immediately upon collection. All family members must also be present and travel together,” he added.
