KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak today offered himself as a candidate to defend his post as Pekan Umno chief at the party polls scheduled on June 30.
"I would like to continue leading Pekan Umno and I hereby offer myself to defend the post of Pekan Umno chief," he posted on Facebook and Twitter today.
At the same time, Najib also called on Umno members to continue supporting the party's struggle so that it could rise again.
"As Umno president and chairman of Barisan Nasional (then), I took responsibility for our defeat in the 14th General Election (GE14).
"We must take a lesson (from the defeat), strengthen our commitment, improve our weaknesses and rehabilitate Umno so that we can restore public confidence in the party," he said.
On May 12, Najib announced his resignation as Umno president and BN chairman with immediate effect. — Bernama
