PUTRAJAYA: The candidate for the Dewan Rakyat Speaker has been chosen and Pakatan Harapan will make an announcement latest by Wednesday (July 11), said PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
Dr Wan Azizah, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said that Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad would make the announcement.
"The deadline is today or tomorrow," she said at a press conference after the launching of Yayasan Kebajikan Negara Palestinian people's fund here on Tuesday (July 10).
Meanwhile, a source said a PKR Member of Parliament has been nominated as the Dewan Rakyat Speaker.
The source said the MP was among the most senior PKR members of the Dewan Rakyat.
"His nomination is in line with Pakatan Harapan's manifesto that the Speaker of Dewan Rakyat will be nominated from among the MPs," the source said.
Pakatan Harapan leaders held a late night closed-door meeting at the Perdana Leadership Foundation, believed to be on the subject of the Dewan Rakyat Speaker.
Leaders seen leaving the foundation on Monday (July 9) were Pakatan chairman Dr Mahathir, Dr Wan Azizah, Amanah president Mohamad Sabu, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, Pribumi deputy president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir and Pakatan secretariat chief Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah.
They left at about 10.30pm.
Earlier, Saifuddin said Pakatan was sticking to its general election manifesto that the Dewan Rakyat Speaker should be appointed from among its Members of Parliament.
"To meet the manifesto requirements, the Speaker will be among the members of Dewan Rakyat," he said.
He said Pakatan wanted the Speaker to have a sense of responsibility to Dewan Rakyat members and to do their jobs fairly and equally.
DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang brushed aside talk of him being linked to the post, saying that he would leave the decision to the Pakatan top leadership.
It was reported that Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim was said to be the sole nominee from Pakatan for the post.
He is, however, not a member of the Dewan Rakyat.
